Monte Mariano Renewed: A Historic Celebration of Faith and Gratitude
MONTE MARIANO, FARANGIPET: Wednesday, 13 May 2026 marked a historic day for the Monte Mariano Chapel and the Novitiate Block. The renovated chapel and novitiate house now stand strengthened with a new and durable roof.

The Capuchin friars express their heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Michael D’Souza — entrepreneur, philanthropist, and visionary — whose generous and complete financial support made the renovation possible.

In recognition of his noble contribution, he was requested to unveil the commemorative plaque. A Thanksgiving Mass was celebrated in the evening in the renovated chapel, presided over by Most Rev. Dr. Peter Paul Saldanha, Bishop of Mangalore.

On this occasion, the Bishop explained the reasons for officially designating Monte Mariano Chapel as a Pilgrimage Site for the special Jubilee Year of St. Francis of Assisi (10 January 2026 – 10 January 2027). In his homily, he also emphasized the spiritual significance of receiving the Plenary Indulgence during the Jubilee Year as the entire Franciscan Family commemorates the 8th centenary of the death of St Francis of Assisi.

A felicitation programme was held in honour of Mr. Michael D’Souza in appreciation of his generous contribution towards the renovation project. Most Rev. Dr. Peter Paul Saldanha, Bishop of Mangalore; Rev. Fr. Robin Victor D’Souza, Provincial Minister of the Holy Trinity Province; Fr Denis Saldanha, Guardian; Fr Victor D'Souza, parish priest of Modankak; Fr William Menezes, parish priest of Omzoor; Mr Roy Castelino, Chief Contractor were present as dignitaries on the occasion.

In his address, Fr. Denis Saldanha, the Superior, highlighted the historical and spiritual importance of Monte Mariano. Rev. Fr. Robin Victor D’Souza expressed heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Michael D’Souza for his magnanimous support in making the long-cherished dream of renovation a reality.

“I was transformed,” remarked Mr. Michael D’Souza as he recalled his first visit to the place before the renovation work began. Reflecting on the significance of Monte Mariano, Bishop Peter Paul Saldanha described it as a holy place and a house of God that holds rich spiritual treasure.

Fr. Paul Melwyn Dsouza proposed the vote of thanks and expressed gratitude on behalf Monte Mariano Community to everyone who contributed to the success of the project and programme. The felicitation programme was compered by Fr. Melroy D’Silva. The faithful gathered for the celebration were served light refreshments.
